Getting started
Do I need to install anything?
Open AlphornTuner in your browser, on a computer, tablet or phone. You can add a shortcut to the home screen of your phone. A connection is still needed to load the app.
Is there anything to pay?
AlphornTuner is free, with no subscription and no advertising. You can use it straight away, without creating an account.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, to load the app each time you open it. Go to alphorntuner.ch: its secure address lets you use the microphone with your permission.
Which devices has it been tested on?
The tests mentioned were carried out on an iPhone and on a computer. The checks on Android and on Safari for Mac are still to be done.
The Tuner and the harmonics
What do H1 to H16 stand for?
They are the sixteen harmonics shown in the app. They follow the natural series of your horn, from the fundamental up to the high sounds.
How do I start the sound?
Touch a note, then adjust the volume of the app and of your device. When you open the Tuner, give the sixteen sounds of your key the time to load.
Are the sounds real horns?
Yes. You are listening to real alphorn recordings: sixteen in F and sixteen in F♯.
Do the note names change with the language?
Yes, so you find your own habits again. In German, B flat is written B and B natural is written H. In English, you will see B♭ and B. In Italian, you find Do, Re and Mi.
The Pitch tuner
What is the difference between the Tuner and the Pitch tuner?
The Tuner plays a reference note for you. The Pitch tuner listens to the one you play and helps you see how in tune it is.
What does the value in cents mean?
It shows the difference from the reference, in hundredths of a semitone. A negative value means a lower sound. A positive value means a higher sound. The centre helps you find your bearing.
How do I switch the microphone on?
Allow the microphone in your browser, then open the Pitch tuner. Use the secure address alphorntuner.ch so that access can be granted.
How can I make the reading steadier?
Settle into a quiet place and hold a steady note. For low sounds, try “Long” in the “Measured sound length” setting.
Is this a chromatic tuner?
AlphornTuner is made for the harmonics of the alphorn. For other instruments, use a tuner made for their scale.
What accuracy can I expect?
The tests described show a difference of under one cent on a steady note, with around 3% of readings incorrect, mostly on H13. These results depend on the listening conditions. In a noisy place, the display may pause. Choose a quiet place and let your own ear complete this reference point.
